十年前，港大為吸引他回流，特別設立了基因中心，在三大合作下，屢見新的突破性研究文獻。徐立之主持校政期間，港大吸引到不少國際優質教學人才，研究成果得以提升，國際地位亦日漸鞏固。
眾所周知，所有大學校長的主要工作係......籌款，其次就係吸引好的學者當院長。但傳統上，港大在這兩方面條件都比海外大學差。現任校長徐立之名氣在西方夠響，吸金能力強，比其他本地大學稍有優勢。反而港大生多不領情，特別是藍血的醫學院。
港大醫學院出身的公民黨員郭家麒說：「100年來港大的使命係為新中國推動民主。」
醫生會前會長謝鴻興亦批判徐立之出賣港大價值，指徐不屬於港大。佢喊驚般話：「你做下好心，你離開啦，唔該你返番中大啦！」新仇舊恨之下，他們要求徐不要續約。這兩位醫生私德麻麻，串病人之餘亦串校長，影衰李嘉誠醫學院。
物以類聚，國際人材見到香港土生土長的國際知名學者都頂唔順香港的校園政治。而港大山頭又高，報酬亦唔夠競爭力。淺水難容，要來港教/學都要諗諗先。
外人唔屈就，本地薑又如何呢。袁國勇被問到會唔會做校長，佢耍手擰頭話做學者好過咯。中大走左個高錕，只有搵個本地薑頂上。縱觀全球華人學者，夠照又捱得義氣冇幾多件矣。

各位同事、同學、校友及港大友好：
回覆刪除大家都知道我的第二任期將於2012年8月31日屆滿，我現已決定在約滿後不再續任，所以我希望你們是首批人士知道這個重要的消息。
我深信香港大學跟所有歷史悠久的院校一樣，必須不斷更新煥發，展示新思創意、嶄新視野，持續向前發展；正如萬物在進化的過程，必須出現更替，方能提升演化，創新里程。
我想告訴大家，我深感榮幸能成為香港大學校長，在過去九年為這所優秀學府貢獻力量。在這段日子，我很高興有機會跟大家合作，與眾多出色的教研學者和一群盡心盡力的同事一起奮鬥，還有充滿才華的同學、忠心的校友、全心全意支持港大這大家庭發展的成員。
我們有幸得到眾多充滿遠見的先行者為大學的創立及發展奠下穩健的基礎，能夠攜手推動港大向前，使規模得以拓展，影響力得以壯大，聲望得以提升；確保香港大學不僅是香港的大學，更是一所立足中國、立足世界的大學。
過去一百年，港大見證無數改變，並且與時俱進，乘時發展。在未來一百年，我衷心相信港大會繼續藉著教育人才、積極研究、服務社群，推動社會向前邁進，以及為世界作出廣大貢獻。

回覆刪除Dear Colleagues, Students, Alumni and Members of the HKU Family,
As you all know, I am nearing the end of my second term at HKU and my contract will expire on 31 August 2012. I want to make sure that you are among the first ones to learn of my intention not to seek re-appointment after the current term.
I firmly believe that HKU, like all other enduring institutions, must have constant renewal, fresh ideas and new perspectives to lead a sustainable development. We must go through successions in evolution in order to achieve the next level of excellence.
I also wish to say that it has been a privilege for me to have been able to serve this fine institution for the past 9 years. Throughout these years, I treasure the opportunities to have met and worked with many of you – talented faculty, devoted colleagues, gifted students, loyal alumni and staunch supporters of the University Family.
Building upon the excellent foundation laid by of our visionary founders and predecessors, together we have been able to grow HKU in size, impact and renown, and into a university that is no longer just for Hong Kong, but also truly for China and the world.
Over the past century, the University has seen many changes and it has grown and developed with the times. In the next 100 years, I am confident that HKU will continue to make a difference to the community, and to the world at large, through education, research and service.
